The Indian government has warned Android users about a new wave of malicious applications disguised as “adult content” apps that are being promoted through advertisements on Instagram and Facebook.

According to the advisory, cybercriminals are using social media ads to lure users into downloading fake apps. Once installed, these apps can steal sensitive personal data including passwords, bank details, OTPs, and contacts.

How the scam works

Officials said the malicious apps are not available on the official Google Play Store. Instead, users are redirected to third-party websites through sponsored posts and reels on Instagram and Facebook.

After installation, the apps request excessive permissions and run in the background to harvest data. Security agencies have urged users to immediately uninstall any such app and run an antivirus scan.

Govt Advisory

The government has advised users to:

  • Download apps only from the official Google Play Store
  • Avoid clicking on suspicious ads or links on social media
  • Check app permissions before installing
  • Keep devices updated with the latest security patches

Authorities also asked people to report such ads to Meta and to cybercrime helpline 1930.
