Nepal Floods: 950+ Dead. And We’re Still Digging.

It’s been 6 days.

Nepal’s still counting bodies.

Sept 1 morning update says 939 dead in Nepal. Other outlets are saying 955 if you add Tibet. Missing is anywhere between 3,925 and 4,471 depending on who you ask. Nobody really knows.

It’s bad.

The hydropower sites are the worst part

This started Aug 26. Border with China. Rock and ice fell, blocked a river, then the whole thing let go.

Rasuwa and Nuwakot got hit first.

And the hydros… god. At least 900 workers missing from 12 projects. I saw one estimate that 500 are still in tunnels.

They did pull 254 people out of Upper Trishuli 1. Indian and Chinese rescue guys are there now too.

Nepal army found 4 bodies in 3 tunnels today. Mud everywhere. In Betrabati village they found 24 people in one house. One house.

I keep thinking about that.

11,000 rescued but…

PM Balendra Shah said 11,000+ rescued. 22,000 security people out there. 16 helicopters.

Sounds like a lot. Doesn’t feel like enough.

India got 158 of its people out. But 500 are still missing. A lot of them were on Kailash Mansarovar trips. Embassy numbers: 977 985 131 6807. Writing it down because I saw someone asking on Twitter.

China says 261 foreigners missing on their side. 49 of them Indian.

It could get worse again

There’s a lake up there now. 2 million cubic meters of water just… sitting. Authorities are freaking out it might breach. China actually stopped rescue work for a bit on Friday because of it.

Bridges are gone. 35 road bridges, 45 hanging bridges. Bodies showing up days later in Chitwan, Gorkha. Downstream.

Morgues can’t keep up. Foreign Secretary said they’re burying unidentifiable remains. Standard protocol, he said. That phrase stuck with me.

And now the politics

China says “not our dams”. Called it malicious speculation.

At least 734 people are confirmed dead in Nepal after flash floods and mudslides ripped through the Himalayas.

Nearly 2,500 people are still missing — including about 100 Americans.

Rescue and Damage

Rescue teams from the Nepal Army, Police, and Armed Police Force have pulled 8,100 people to safety.

Water’s Dropping at the Border. Now There’s Another Lake.

GYIRONG, Tibet-Nepal Border — After 3 days of satellite updates, there’s finally some good news.

The lake that formed on the Tibet-Nepal line is draining. Not fast. But it’s draining.

As of Saturday morning, China’s Water Ministry has it at 99,000 square meters. That’s down about 21,000 square meters since Thursday. For context, that’s roughly 14 football fields of water that’s moved on.

It shouldn’t have been there to begin with.

What happened

On Wednesday, a glacier collapse sent a wall of rock and ice down the Purepu Tsangpo. It took out the Gyirong crossing completely.

7 confirmed dead. 554 still missing.

The roads are gone and phone networks are down. The fear wasn’t just the flood we already had. It was the next one. If that natural dam gave way, it would have hit crews working downstream with basically no warning.

On Friday, 15 personnel from China Aneng were flown in with drones and satellite gear to monitor it. Water did spill over Friday afternoon and everyone was pulled back for a few hours. It looked bad on the feed. Then the data came back stable and teams went back in.

Bad news: A second lake

There’s a second lake now. Lower down the slide path.

Officials say it’s bigger than the first, over 120,000 sqm, but they don’t know the depth yet. Nobody does.

It’s raining again in the valley. About 50 workers are out digging through what’s left of the port with shovels. On Friday, the first team in said all they found was rubble.

So yeah, the first lake is shrinking. And yeah, we’re watching a second one form.

Huawei apparently remembered too. They dropped a teaser ad today. Didn’t show much. But within an hour Weibo was full of what look like official renders.

What’s new

Dark purple. Triple screen. And one big change: it folds inward now.

Instead of zig-zagging out, both sides fold in. G-fold, like Samsung’s tri-fold. Dumb name, honestly. But smart move. Means your screens aren’t facing the world when it’s in your pocket.

They also finally added a cover screen. The original forced you to unfold it just to check WhatsApp. This one has a little outer display. The cut-out is a pill, not a dot.

Leakers are saying multispectral camera. Could be. Could also be nothing.

The back camera is still that octagon in the middle. Rim looks chunkier this time. Huawei teased square and circle for months and then… nah, same shape.

Launch

Expected launch is September 7. Huawei’s already blasting it on a billboard in Wangfujing, Beijing.

Look, is it exciting? Kinda. The first one was a flex. This one actually sounds usable. If the cover screen is decent and the screens don’t die in 6 months, people might actually buy it instead of just posting it.

Study: Strong Deep Sleep May Slow Alzheimer’s Progression, Even With High Orexin

Researchers just published a study in Neurology that’s making people rethink sleep and Alzheimer’s.

They took 60 people, all 60+ with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s. Hooked them to sleep machines for one night. Then the next morning, took spinal fluid.

What were they looking for? A chemical called orexin. It’s basically what tells your brain “stay awake” or “go sleep”. They also measured deep sleep waves — the ones where you actually form memories. Then they checked who got worse 3 years later.

What they found

People with high orexin saw their Alzheimer’s progress faster. Not great.

But here’s the interesting part: the people who still had strong deep sleep waves seemed protected.

Even with high orexin, if your sleep spindles were dense, the decline was slower. Stronger spindles = more protection. That’s basically it.

Weird detail: women had way more orexin in their spinal fluid than men did. Researchers don’t know why yet.

The reality check

60 people is a small sample. One night of sleep isn’t long-term data. And they didn’t have a healthy control group to compare to.

So we can’t say “this cures anything”.

The reason this study matters is that orexin drugs already exist. They’re used for narcolepsy. So if deep sleep really does buffer the brain, that could be a path researchers can actually test.

Tbh we need way bigger studies before getting excited. But the link between deep sleep and slowing decline is worth watching.

In Space, Boiling Water Does the Opposite. And That’s a Problem for Rockets.

On Earth when you boil water, bubbles go up.

In space there IS no up.

Scientists have been trying to figure out what that means for rockets and space computers. They use super cold liquids to stay cool, but nobody really knew what boiling looks like in zero gravity.

So researchers from the University of Florida did a “dumb but cool” test. They took liquid nitrogen — basically fake rocket fuel — and flew it on those “vomit comet” planes. The ones that dive to make zero-g for about 20 seconds.

And???

What they found

It went the opposite way of what they thought. At first.

Turns out when bubbles CAN’T float away, they just sit on the hot metal. And that weirdly makes them pull heat out FASTER. Way better cooling.

The lead researcher Youngsup Song said: “yeah we expected worse, got better instead”

BUT. Big but. It also breaks 65% sooner.

Because all those bubbles just sit there and eventually glom together and dry the whole surface out. Then nothing cools and everything would fry.

So it’s like… better, until it’s suddenly catastrophic.

Why it matters

Mars missions. Deep space. Rocket fuel has to stay cold for YEARS.

If engineers can figure out how to design tank walls to stop bubbles from doing this, we might actually make long missions work.

Caveats: they only tested nitrogen. Only for short bursts. And they used a perfect mirror-smooth silicon surface so there were no scratches messing it up. Real rocket tanks are way messier.

Still tho. Kinda cool that space breaks boiling.
