I Tried To Figure Out If Bilibili Pays. It’s Weird.

I downloaded Bilibili at 2am last Tuesday because I saw a meme about it on Reddit. “China YouTube” they said. “They’re paying creators now.”

Figured I’d waste 20 minutes. Ended up wasting 2 hours.

Bilibili is old. Like 16 years old. Started with anime. My brother in India used to watch it for that. Now it’s got 376M MAU. That’s from their press release last month when they launched the English site.

I don’t even know why I cared. Maybe just FOMO.

The money part

Okay so requirements. This is where I got confused.

GadgetsNow says 1,000 followers OR 100,000 views. I read that as 10,000 at first because my brain is broken. [5]

Money-wise it’s dumb. Ads are $2 RPM. That’s nothing. The new global thing is supposed to be $0.70 per 1k views but… is it? Bilibili hasn’t even put it on the English dashboard. I say “supposed to” because NDTV reported it and everyone’s just quoting NDTV. [2]

The real money is coins. People throw you virtual batteries. It’s like Twitch but in Chinese. Can be $0, can be a lot. No way to predict.

It’s still beta as hell

Here’s the part nobody’s saying out loud.

Bilibili’s marketing: “Easy sign up for Westerners!” Reality: lol no.

Saw this on X yesterday from a guy testing it:

“dashboard is live but translation is cooked 💀 payout setup took me an hour and im still not sure it worked. its youtube studio if youtube studio was made in 2009”

That’s more honest than any PR line. [1][3] It’s not broken. It’s just… first week. You’re the guinea pig.

I genuinely have no idea.

If you already make tech videos, just crosspost. Takes 20 minutes. Worst case: nothing. Best case: you’re early.

But don’t quit YouTube.

I’m gonna post 2 videos and forget about it for a month. If something happens I’ll update this.
