I spent ten minutes on a sidewalk this morning trying to pull up a flight boarding pass in Gmail. Coffee in one hand, gym bag in the other, thumb scrolling past three years of promotional spam and order confirmations. That specific brand of mobile frustration is what Google claims to fix with its new Gemini Audio voice features in Workspace.

Google’s marketing pitch is “conversational Workspace,” but in practice, only one of these tools feels like a permanent habit: Gmail Live.

Instead of tapping through search filters or guessing exact keywords, you tap the mic and ask: “What gate is my flight leaving from?” or “Did my landlord send the lease renewal yet?” Gemini scans your inbox, connects context across threads, and talks through the answer. It displays a live transcript with direct links back to the source emails—a necessity given AI’s habit of making things up—and you can cut it off mid-sentence to pivot topics. When you’re walking or carrying groceries, it’s a genuine upgrade over mobile typing.

Where the whole concept falls apart is Docs Live and Keep Live.

Docs Live acts as a co-writer converting spoken thoughts into document drafts, while Keep Live splits voice rants into categorized notes or updates grocery lists. Both work fine technically, but using them outside a locked room is absurd. Dictating a proposal outline in a coffee shop makes you look like someone taking a sales call on speakerphone. Ranging through a grocery list out loud while standing in line with AirPods in just earns you strange looks from strangers.

To top it off, Google is locking all of this behind its paid tiers. Gmail and Keep Live require at least the $4.99/month AI Plus plan (with Keep rolling out Android-first), while Docs Live is saved for Pro and Ultra subscribers. Workspace Business accounts are stuck waiting for a preview later this fall.

If your daily routine involves walking around with earbuds in and managing a chaotic inbox on the move, Gmail Live is genuinely great. But for desktop work, long documents, or sitting in an open office, typing isn’t going anywhere.
